OBESITY IS A DISEASE

Obesity is not just being fat however it is a health condition in which an individual has accumulated too much body fat which can lead to adverse effects on their health. The first time WHO declared Obesity as a disease was in 1997.

HOW CAN YOU DETERMINE IF YOU ARE OBESE OR NOT?

  • Calculating BMI (Body mass index) by a formula

Weight(kg)/Height(m2) – Ideal BMI should be between 19 to 25

  • Waist to Hip ratio – The ideal ratio should be <0.9

CAUSES OF OBESITY

  • Genetic- Family inheritance
  • Lifestyle Choices
  • Unhealthy diet- Oily/fried food, fast food, alcohol, carbonated drinks, excess sugar content, overeating
  • Irregular eating habits
  • Lack of physical exercise
  • Other Diseases – Hypothyroidism, Cushing syndrome, PCOD, etc.
  • Side effects of certain medications like antidepressants, steroids, and beta-blockers.
  • Addiction to alcohol/smoking/drugs.
  • Psychological factors like Boredom, Loneliness, anxiety, and depression.

 OBESITY BRINGS SO MANY FRIENDS TOGETHER LIKE,

  • Heart diseases like Hypertension (High blood pressure), Dyslipidemia (High cholesterol levels), and Stroke.
  • Type 2 Diabetes.
  • Digestive problems like Gall bladder diseases, GERD, Fatty liver, and liver cirrhosis.
  • Sleep apnea (Breathing repeatedly stops during sleep)
  • Osteoarthritis of the knee, hip joint
  • Increased risk of certain types of cancers like endometrial, breast, colon, prostate
  • Infertility in young females by polycystic ovarian diseases
  • Risk of sudden cardiac death

Impaired quality of life – Depression, disability, shame & guilt, social isolation.
