Understanding the procedures, their patho-physiology and the condition of patients at the time of surgery are crucial in the management of Gastrointestinal [GI] Surgery Anaesthesia.
Anaesthesia in G I Surgery offers many challenges because major & vital organs such as liver, pancreas, stomach, esophagus and intestines are operated.
Adequate sedation and analgesia are important parts of diagnostics like endoscopies, surgery and post operative patient management.
Various levels of sedation and analgesia or anaesthesia are used depending on the patient’s status and the procedures or surgeries.
Pain management is done after surgery for pain free recovery.
Scope
- Pre-operative evaluation of patients to assess the severity of the disease and associated co-morbid conditions of the patient
- Optimization of the patient’s cardio respiratory status and fluid and nutritional status
- Design the most suitable plan for anaesthesia from General Anaesthesia and Combined with Epidural Analgesia wherever indicated
- Provide Peri-operative analgesia by multimodal approach using continuous Intravenous infusions or epidural delivery systems
Team of Doctors
- He is M.D, D.A in Aanesthesiology from V S Hospital, Ahmedabad. He is consultant and Head of Anaesthesia department at kaizen hospital since beginning. He has special interest in Anaesthesia and pain management in major high risk GI surgeries, laparoscopic surgery.
- He is a member of a team for ERAS protocol in GI surgeries for reduction of morbidity by managing patients preoperatively by goal directed fluid therapy and pain management by multimodal approach. He has done a Fellowship in liver transplant anaesthesia at ASAN medical center, Seoul, South Korea in January 2008.
- He has worked as a junior consultant anaesthesiologist in V S Hospital where he has worked exclusively in cardiac anaesthesia, neuro anaesthesia and pediatric anaesthesia for one and a half years followed by consultant cardiac anaesthesiologist and DNB guide at sterling hospital, Ahmedabad for 10 years.
- Where he has experience of conducting around 2000 cardiovascular and thoracic surgeries ,open heart surgeries, large Experience in kidney and liver transplants anaesthesia, robotic assisted surgeries.
- He Has been DNB guide for last 14 years. He has been faculty in national and state conferences of anaesthesia, DNB examiner for anaesthesia DNB examinations.
- He has done presentations and publications in anaesthesia, he has his contribution as an author of chapter of Anaesthesia and pain management in a couple of books of GI surgery edited by Dr Sanjiv Haribhakti.
2.) Dr. Meenu Sharma (M.D. Anaesthesia)
- She has completed her M.B.B.S. from Government Medical College, Vadodara, Gujarat in 2016 & Completed M. D. Anaesthesiology from GMC Bhavnagar Medical College in 2022.
- She is working as a Consultant Anaesthesiologist with Kaizen Hospital, Ahmedabad since August 2023. She is well acquainted to anaesthesia administration, patient monitoring, preoperative and postoperative counselling, pain management for high risk laparoscopic and complex open GI surgeries, Bariatric surgeries and Endoscopic procedures and proficient in providing postoperative care.
- She has expertise in effective communication and collaboration with surgeons and team. She has skills of quick and informed decision making in high pressure situations.
- She is regularly giving academic training to hospital staff for basic and advanced life support care of critically ill patients.
- She has special interest in ICU Critical Care and Ultra Sound Guided regional anaesthesia.
3.) Dr. Venu Gandhi (M.D. Anaesthesia)
- She has completed her M.B.B.S. from G.M.E.R.S. Gotri Medical College, Vadodara, Gujarat in 2017 & Completed M. D. Anaesthesiology from GMC Bhavnagar Medical College in 2022.
- She was awarded Gold Medal for pursuing First Rank in Final Anaesthesiology exams held by M. K. University, Bhavnagar.
- She is working as a Consultant Anaesthesiologist with Kaizen Hospital, Ahmedabad since June 2024. She is well acquainted to anaesthesia administration, patient monitoring, preoperative and postoperative counselling, pain management for high risk laparoscopic and complex open GI surgeries, Bariatric surgeries and Endoscopic procedures, radiological procedures and proficient in providing postoperative care.

4.) Dr. Shaila Shah ( MBBS, DA )
- Dr. Shaila Atul Shah is practicing at present as consultant anesthesiologist at Kaizen Hospital.
- She has done her under graduate and postgraduate studies from Government Medical college, Aurangabad, Maharashtra.
- She has worked as consultant anesthetist for 25 years at Model Hospital ESIC, Bapunagar, Ahmedabad.
- She has a brief experience of Clinical attachment in anesthesia department at May Day Hospital, Croydon University hospital, Thornton, U.K.
- She has done fellowship in critical care medicine from Medvarsity, Apollo Hospital, Ahmedabad.
- Her special interest is in the postoperative pain management for major G.I. and Laparoscopic surgeries.
- She is actively involved in to critical care management in ICU and training of clinical staff in basic and advanced life support care.
