WAY TO COME OUT FROM

OBESITY MAZE

The best way to treat obesity is by developing healthy eating habits and carrying active life style. Though many people have tried to slim down with diets and exercise, only few of them could succeed. So, in this journey of weight losing Bariatric Surgery is a boon for obese people. At National Institutes of Health Consensus Conference it was concluded that, Bariatric surgery is the most effective therapy available for morbid obesity (BMI>37.5) and can result in improvement or complete resolution of obesity co morbidities. KNOW ABOUT BARIATRIC SURGERY Bariatric Surgery is invented for obese & morbid obese people who need to lose a significant amount of weight. This surgery has reduced the death rates of patients with severe obesity especially when they have developed and maintained healthy eating habits and life style after surgery. Bariatric Surgery is a very crucial decision as it transforms a person’s life completely. An erroneous decision can damage a person’s life permanently. That is why this decision should be taken considering factors like individual’s BMI, Life Style, Preferences, Age, Gender, Status of Diabetes, etc.

THERE ARE MAINLY TWO TYPES OF BARIATRIC SURGERY:

  • Restrictive Procedure: In this procedure, size of the stomach is
  • reduced to reduce the consumption of food.
  • Malabsorptive Procedure: In this procedure, food absorption
  • is limited in intestinal tract by “bypassing” a portion of the small
  • intestine to varying degrees.

Gastric Bypass

In Gastric Bypass, a surgeon creates a small stomach pouch with the help of stapling and attaches a section of the small intestine directly to the pouch. This allows food to bypass a portion of the small intestine. By bypassing a portion of the small intestine, an individuals body absorbs fewer calories. As one eats less, his/her body will stop storing excess calories and start using his/her fat supply for energy.

Benefits:

  • No postoperative adjustment
  • Reduces the risk of heart attack
  • Surgery causes on average 60 to 80% long-term excess weight loss
  • Shown to help resolve type 2 diabetes (68%), high blood pressure (66%), obstructive, sleep apnea (76%), and to help improve high cholesterol (95%)

Mini Gastric Bypass

Mini Gastric Bypass is an easily reversible, less complicated and minimum pain causing treatment. In this procedure a stomach is divided in two pouches. The small pouch is fused with lower portion of small intestine. This creation of a smaller stomach pouch can hold less than a cup of food and make a person get fuller quick and longer. Because of this resection food will not broken down, absorbed or processed completely and ultimately one will lose weight faster.

Benefits:

  • Low risk & minimal pain
  • Reversible treatment
  • Less re-routing of the intestines
  • Relatively less expensive

Sleeve Gastrectomy

Sleeve Gastrectomy (Gastric Sleeve) is a surgical weight loss procedure. In this surgery approximately 80 – 90% of the stomach is removed and remaining part of the stomach takes the shape of a tube or sleeve. The tube-shaped stomach is sealed closed with staples or sutures. This resection leaves a significant effect on gut hormones that helps a person feel less hungry and fuller longer.

Benefits:

  • Normal absorption
  • No dumping syndrome
  • Lower risk of peptic ulcer
  • Generally rapid and reliable weight loss
  • No postoperative adjustment

WHY KAIZEN ?

H. pylori infection –Helicobacter pyloriis a type of bacteria that lives in the digestive tract.H. pyloriis very common; some data suggest that it is present in approximately 50 percent of people

This bacteria can cause the following, all of which can contribute to peptic ulcer formation:

An increase in the amount of acid in the stomach and small intestine

Inflammation of the lining of the digestive tract

A breakdown of the protective mucous layer

NSAIDs – The use of NSAIDs can also cause peptic ulcers in some people. They are commonly used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Many people also take low-dose aspirin daily to prevent heart attack or stroke.

NSAIDs can cause changes in the protective mucous layer of the digestive tract, leading to ulcers in some people. The risk of ulcer formation depends on multiple factors, including the NSAID type, dose, and duration of use.

Other risk factors

  • Genetics likely play a role,
  • People who smoke cigarettes are more likely than nonsmokers to develop peptic ulcers.
  • Drinking alcohol
  • certain foods
  • Psychological

PEPTIC ULCER SYMPTOMS

Commonest symptoms are :

  • Upper abdominal pain or discomfort (often a burning or hunger-like feeling)
  • Feeling full quickly when eating
  • Stomach pain, belching, or feeling bloated after eating
  • Heartburn or acid reflux
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting (in severe cases, there may be blood in the vomit)
  • Blood in the stools (which may cause stool to appear black or tar-like)

Upper endoscopy – An upper endoscopy is a procedure in which a thin, flexible tube is inserted into the mouth and down the throat. The tube has a light and a tiny camera on the end that projects images from within the

digestive tract onto a monitor.

Ulcers can often be diagnosed through upper endoscopy. A small sample of tissue, called a biopsy, can also be taken to check for abnormal cells, cancer, or an infection withH. pylori.

Barium swallow – In some cases, a barium swallow may be done. This involves drinking a thick substance containing barium while X-rays are taken; the barium allows the digestive tract to be seen more clearly. This procedure is less common than endoscopy for diagnosing ulcers, but may be appropriate for some patients.

H. pylori testing – Anyone with a confirmed peptic ulcer should be tested forH. pyloriso that the infection, if present, can be treated.

Treatment

Treatment of Acid peptic disease includes use of drugs which decreases acid secretion, drugs which improves the mucosal barrier function and helps in healing of ulcer. Your doctor can suggest better medicine for acid peptic disease.

H Pylori infection of the stomach requires H Pylori eradication medicine which includes antibiotics as well acid suppressive medicines.
